Family Kitchen
This magnificent Westchester County home built in the late 1920s is now a part of the historic register. We were hired by the homeowner to design the back of house, which consists of mud room, pool kitchen, main kitchen, and butler’s pantry.
Architect Bana Choura did a fabulous job incorporating the old garage and old kitchen to create a 21st century space. She took the old garage and raised the floor to the level of the existing kitchen which was the old back of house. Her excellent design of the shell gave me the foundation enabled me to create a functional architectural interior for this family.
Decorator, Lucy Lichtenberg of Lichtenberg Interiors, put her fine touches throughout each space with the pendant lights, tables, chairs, and accessories.
In this kitchen, one will find the large main sink at the window and one very large preparation sink on the island. State of the art appliances were installed for efficiency. There is also a high speed microwave oven, and a fully concealed refrigerator and freezer with bulletin boards inside the front panels. The light restoration glass tall wall cabinets house the everyday dishes and glasses. The very open floor plan accommodates a busy traffic pattern that does not interfere with the cook. Furthermore, it is always important to me that a kitchen lasts the lifetime of the home. Therefore the cabinetry was stained rather than painted for wear-ability. An open floor plan was perfect for this family and their many friends who keep this kitchen active. Additionally, the mother of this kitchen is a special mom who involves herself in a great deal of volunteer work. Therefore, the kitchen often transforms into a space for volunteer related activities. Altogether, it was important in my design that this kitchen be a timeless, functional, and family friendly space.
