Hildene Linen and Ironing Room
“If we are organized backstage, then our lives are less complicated”
— Unknown
I find it very rewarding to have a linen storage that keeps one’s sheets, towels, tablecloths, placemats and blankets all organized. This wonderful wall of storage built at Robert Todd Lincoln’s home, known as the Hildene Estate, is a major feature of the home’s Linen and Ironing room. Creating a space for linen storage is often a daunting task. The Hildene Linen and Ironing room, a model for all linen and ironing rooms, has a place for everything! In addition to the room’s beautiful millwork, the architects and designers of the home kept in mind the utility of the room and maximized its efficiency. Furthermore, the room was built out of cedar. This wood preserves fabrics for many years. Each drawer is also detailed with a metal labor holder. Such organization and usability of the room makes any owner’s storage needs a pleasure.
Aside from the usefulness of the room, it is beautifully designed. The stile and rail proportions to each other are perfect, there are square framing beads throughout, not to mention the acute panel raise, and the plain inset is simple, yet beautiful. The Linen and Ironing room in the Hildene home, unlike any other, is a masterpiece of a storage room.
