Summer Beam

There are ten kinds of framing timbers which were employed in the colonial house. Their use and their names have remained standard in frame construction for more than two centuries. The summer beam pictured here, is a heavy ceiling beam spanning the middle of a large room. When designing the kitchen, this summer beam was taken into consideration when laying out the space. I often find that I design a kitchen from the ceiling down. This always helps me to have an overall view of traffic flow, appliance location, and lighting within the space.
